Construction has officially begun on a new train station in Bristol, located at Brabazon.

Enabling works and site surveys began on Friday 14th March. Once complete, the station - currently known as North Filton Station - will form part of MetroWest Phase 2 and is expected to connect Brabazon to Bristol Temple Meads in under 25 minutes.

A Major New Transport Hub for North Bristol

The new train station will significantly improve public transport options for residents, workers, visitors and concert goers at Brabazon and YTL Arenal.

Designed as a fully accessible rail hub, it will offer step-free access, covered waiting areas, and blue-badge parking. Secure, covered cycle parking and CCTV will also be installed.

The station will connect with the Metrobus route through Brabazon - also expected in 2026 - enabling seamless onward journeys across North Bristol. It will also link into a new network of walking and cycling routes that will weave through the neighbourhood, promoting sustainable and active travel.

Supporting the Creation of a New Neighbourhood

The station follows BAM’s recent delivery of Ashley Down station, which opened in Bristol last year. YTL Developments is contributing over £1million towards the cost of the new train station, ensuring key transport infrastructure is in place from the outset as Brabazon transforms the former Filton Airfield.

Sebastian Loyn, Director of Planning & Development at YTL Developments, said: “Investing in public transport and active travel is a key part of the vision to ensure Brabazon becomes a thriving new town for Bristol. With our first homes now selling fast, and plans underway for the new rail station, Brabazon Park and YTL Arena, progress is well underway to deliver on that vision.”

A Milestone for the Region’s Growing Rail Network

Representatives from YTL Developments, Network Rail and Great Western Railway (GWR) were joined on site by local MP Claire Hazelgrove, and South Gloucestershire Council leaders Councillors Maggie Tyrell and Ian Boulton to mark the construction.

This follows YTL Group’s announcement in January confirming £4 billion of investment across its UK businesses over the next five years

Colin Skellett, YTL’s UK Group Chief Executive, said: “Brabazon is where the pioneers of aerospace created the future. Today the next generation of pioneers are shaping the way we will live, work and play in the 21st century.”

“The new train station is essential to our shared vision to create the UK’s most sustainable new town.”

Mark Hopwood, Managing Director at GWR, commented: “The development of Brabazon new town and its new station highlights the crucial role that rail infrastructure plays in enabling growth, creating jobs, and providing much-needed housing.”

Marcus Jones, Western Route Director at Network Rail, said: “It’s fantastic to see the new station in North Bristol moving forward. This will bring access to the railway to a whole new community at Brabazon and link people from elsewhere in Bristol to this exciting new town and the eagerly awaited arena.”
